False start

So I was up at 0455hrs to pedal in on my Ridgback all the way along NCR5 to work. I set off about 0510hrs and half a mile along the road I had a puncture in my front wheel, which was the one I repaired last night from Tuesday's ride home. I swapped the tube and carried on about another mile when the front went flat again! No more spare tubes and clearly there is an issue with either the tyre (which I always check) or the wheel, maybe a loose spoke head protuding through the rim tape (which I didn't check). Counting Tuesday that's 3 flats in about a mile and a half pedalling, a problem wouldn't you say?

I walked home and got my Giant out of the garage and pedalled in on that, it felt like a pretty fast ride and I was proven right by these stats:

Your Performance on the trip started on: 3 Jun 2010 05:50
Trip time: 00:35:32
Trip distance: 11.74 mi
Trip calories: 755 kcal
Average speed: 17.0 mph
Maximum speed: 42.1 mph
Climbed altitude: 400 ft

A new record into work and a new highest average speed!

Last night's pedal was a standard jobby, Harbourne, QE, Frankley Beeches, stats here:

Your Performance on the trip started on: 2 Jun 2010 15:04
Trip time: 00:42:57
Trip distance: 11.55 mi
Trip calories: 703 kcal
Average speed: 14.9 mph
Maximum speed: 34.8 mph
Climbed altitude: 695 ft

Just a quckie to finish off today's Blog, yesterday afternoon at work and at home all yesterday evening I was suffering from quite nasty cramps in my Hamstrings and feet, not while I was pedalling home funnily enough though. What the hell would be causing that? I stay hydrated all the time. But I seem to be fine today, another mystery from an old broken body I suppose.

  1. I can't recommend tubeless highly enough. Yes, you still get punctures. But, as long as there is latex in the tyre it self-heals.
Although, you should still carry a tube, just in case. And, you need to keep checking the pressures, as some air leaks out each time it fixes itself.

Re: cramps. I find that if I cramp during a ride, then it's down to lack of salts. But, if I cramp post-ride, then it's down to not warming down correctly (sitting correctly, stretching, post-ride drink/food, etc).

  2. I've just bought a new phone, so for the first time ever I had a GPS/computer thingy-me-bob running during my commute home last night.
(just never bothered to put my Garmin on my bike while commuting) My average speed was a wowfull 22km/h, how dispointing is that!

  5. Kudos to you for going back and getting the spare bike. If it was me I'd have jumped in the car lol.

And damn you dont leave yourself much time to get ready in the mornings mate. It takes me 15 minutes just to swing my arse out of bed.

  6. That's definitely too early to get up!

It takes me 30-40 mins to get up, get ready, have breakfast and wake up.

I find I sometimes get cramps post ride but I put it down to not enough salt replacement.
